Bio
Ever since my Dad took me trolling for Kawahai as a kid, boats and the ocean have been a passion. Sunday night doses of Jacques Cousteau and my Dad have a lot to answer for.
Northland's north-east coast is paradise for me. I was born and raised in Taranaki; my folks brought me on holiday to the Bay of Islands when I was fifteen and I knew I'd found where I wanted to live.
I was a mad keen fisherman in those early days. I came north when I left school and worked on gamefishing boats for three seasons: 7-day live-aboard charters cruising up and down the coast, tucking up in secluded bays in the evenings. This was a type of boating we didn't have on the wild west coast of my childhood. In between seasons I crewed on yachts sailing up and around the Pacific.
I’ve always had a great love for the natural beauty of the ocean and the life and land associated with it. My personal photography has always been about trying to capture that beauty. Many of these photos are taken on the edge of light: before and after sunset and sunrise – a magical time to be on the water and for making pictures.
My other great love is wooden boats. Our launch, Arethusa, pictured right, she's clicking over 107 this year. She’s a perfect platform for exploring and photographing the northeast coast. You can read about her rolling restoration here
I've been involved with community marine conservation group Fish Forever, for the past ten years. We're working to achieve better marine protection in the Bay of Islands. You can read about the groups work here.
My wife Deb and I co-ordinate our local Kerikeri Peninsula Conservation Trust. We're fortunate to have kiwi living in our back yard. You can read about the project here: https://www.kpcct.kiwi
I’ve worked as a commercial photographer since 2007.
Thank you by for stopping by, these images are a way of expressing my love and gratitude of the incredible natural wonderland we have on our doorstep here in the Bay of Islands. I hope you enjoy them.
